How to combine multiple PDF files in the right order
Order is set at the file level. Put the files in sequence in the list before you merge, and the pages follow that sequence.
Need pages from different files mixed together, like page 2 of one report after page 5 of another? Merge first, then open the result in Rearrange PDF Pages and drag single pages where they belong. The same grid lets you rotate or delete stray pages before you save.
If only part of a file should go in, pull those pages out first with Extract PDF Pages and merge the smaller file instead.
How to combine PDF files on a Mac with Preview
Preview can merge PDFs without extra software. Open the first PDF, choose View > Thumbnails to show the sidebar, then drag the other PDF files from Finder into the sidebar at the point where they should go. Choose File > Export as PDF to save the combined copy, so the original stays untouched.

What to do if the merged PDF is too large
A merged file is roughly the size of its parts added together. When that is too big for an email or an upload form, run it through Compress PDF. Troubleshooting: when PDF files will not combine
A password-protected PDF cannot be merged until the encryption is removed. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF if you know the password, then add it to the merge.
A file that throws an error or opens blank is often damaged. Repair PDF rebuilds broken files and usually makes them usable again.
Pages that come out sideways were sideways in the source file. Fix them after merging with Rotate PDF, which saves the new rotation into the file. Pages of different sizes are kept as they are, so a Letter page and an A4 page sit side by side in the result. To make them uniform, run the merged file through Resize PDF.
