Why a black box is not a redaction
Drawing a black rectangle over text, or using a black highlighter, only covers it. The text is still in the file underneath. Anyone can select it, copy it or delete the rectangle.
Real redaction removes the content. PDFDEN does it by turning each redacted page into an image with the boxes baked in. There is no text layer left under the black, so nothing can be recovered from it.
The trade-off: text on redacted pages is no longer selectable or searchable. Pages without redactions keep their text as normal.
How to redact text in a PDF by searching
Long documents make manual boxing slow and easy to get wrong. Search for the name, email address or number instead, and the redact tool boxes every match. Review the boxes before you apply them, then add manual boxes for anything the search missed, like signatures or handwritten notes.
Search relies on the text layer. A scanned PDF has none, so on scans you need to draw boxes by hand.

Redacting the pages does not touch the file's properties. The author name, the software and the dates may still reveal who made it. Wipe them with the PDF Metadata Editor.
If the redacted file still needs to stay private, add a password with Protect PDF. And avoid cropping as a shortcut: cropping a PDF only hides the area outside the box, it does not delete it.

What to look for before you share a redacted PDF
Redaction fails most often because something was missed, not because the tool failed. Before sending, check for:
- Names and numbers in headers, footers and page margins.
- Signatures, stamps and handwritten notes, which search cannot find.
- The same detail written differently, like "J. Smith" and "John Smith". Search for each version.
- Charts or photos that contain the information as part of an image.
Then open the downloaded file and use your viewer's search to look for each redacted term. If search finds nothing and you cannot select text under the boxes, the PDF redaction did its job.
