How to save a Word document as a PDF in Word
If you have Word, its own export gives the closest match to your layout, because Word uses the same fonts and styling it shows on screen.
On Windows, go to File, then Save As, and choose PDF in the file type list. File, then Export, then Create PDF/XPS does the same thing.
On a Mac, go to File, then Save As, and pick PDF as the file format. You can also use File, then Print, and choose Save as PDF from the PDF menu at the bottom of the dialog.
Convert DOCX to PDF without Word
Without Word on the machine, a browser converter is the quickest option. The DOCX to PDF tool reads the file and builds a PDF with its headings, paragraphs, bold and italic text, lists, tables, links and images.
It does not copy Word's exact styling. Fonts become standard PDF fonts, which cover Latin characters. Headers, footers, text boxes and columns are left out. For a plain report, letter or essay that is fine. For a heavily designed brochure, export from Word itself.

Word's mobile apps can share or export a document as a PDF, though the menu names differ between versions. Look for Export, Share or Print in the file menu.
If the file came as an email attachment and there is no Word app, save the .docx to the device and open Word to PDF in the browser. The conversion runs on the device itself, so it works on a Chromebook the same way it does on a laptop.
Before you send the PDF, open it once and scroll through. Check that tables fit the page and images sit where you expect.
What about old .doc files?
The converter reads .docx only. Files in the older .doc format are not supported.
Open a .doc in any word processor and save it as .docx first. If you are already in Word, you can skip that and save straight to PDF.
Combine several Word files into one PDF
